BIO
Jen Reeder has been writing and traveling with her husband Bryan Fryklund since they graduated with English degrees from Syracuse University in 1994. Nomadic by nature, they have lived in Hawaii (Maui and the Big Island), Australia, Taiwan, California, Washington, D.C., Seattle, New Orleans, Durango and now Denver, Colo. They have traveled extensively in Mexico, Central and South America, Southeast Asia, the Philippines, Australia, New Zealand and the United States.
In addition to freelance travel writing, Jen has been on the staff of several publications. Abroad, she was the editor of Wildlife News in the Australia office of World Wildlife Fund and a contributor to the entertainment magazine Rickshaw in Taiwan. Domestically, she helped found The Durango Telegraph, an alternative weekly newspaper in southwest Colorado before joining the staff of Lousiana Cookin’ magazine in New Orleans.
Jen and Bryan moved back to Hawaii after Hurricane Katrina blew them out of New Orleans. They co-authored a first-edition guidebook to the Big Island for Hunter Publishing called Adventure Guide: Hawaii the Big Island. After spending seven months and plenty of money researching the book, they lit on the idea of publishing destination guidebooks for specific audiences – books “by fanatics, for fanatics.” In honor of their beloved hot tub in Durango, they named their company Hot Tub Publishing and set off on a six-island tour of 50 golf courses to research the company’s first book, The Golf Fanatic’s Guide to Hawaii. While Bryan was playing and reviewing the courses, Jen was scrambling around them with her Canon Rebel XT, scoping the best camera angles and hoping golfers would clear the shot while the light was still good.
Jen credits her use of diplomacy while editing the manuscript with preserving the couple’s marriage.
